Case Study: California Tourism


Background

California is the number one travel destination in the United States. Tourism annually generates more than $75 billion in direct travel spending for the state’s economy. For a state where tourism is so large and important, its funding for tourism promotion is relatively small. California’s state funding for tourism currently ranks 31st in the nation, on approximate par with states like South Dakota. In this landscape of restricted funding, California wanted to develop a low-cost way to reach potential travelers and provide them with value-added offers that would make the state more affordable and provide tourism related businesses with a way to reach these visitors.

Solution

The state’s advertising agency asked Destination Analysts to develop an innovative, online offer delivery system, California Vacation Offer Wizard. Offer Wizard is a database of discounts and other incredible offers at California's attractions, shops, restaurants, transportation providers, and hotels. This heavily-used service allows potential visitors to search for offers by region and type. It also allows California businesses to log-in and administer their own offers, making changes and updates as suits their business needs. Offer Wizard provides a flexible, trackable system of value-added offer delivery with near zero on-going costs to the State.

Results

Currently over 600 business from all California regions have registered and placed offers on Offerwizard.com. Thousands of the offers have been downloaded and used by visitors to California.
